Who are we?

Care in Walton and Hersham is a local transport charity serving the residents of Walton-on-Thames and Hersham.

Our Constitution states that the group’s Object is “to relieve persons in Walton and Hersham who are elderly, sick, disabled or in need.”

Care is a voluntary organisation comprised of a committee, drivers and Duty Officers who take requests for transport using a dedicated mobile phone. Our volunteer drivers use their own cars to take clients to medical and dental appointments.

How we help

The client asking for transport will have seen our name and number either on various posters around the area, or online, or from one of the small cards given out at health centres.

There is no need for clients (residents of Walton or Hersham) to register with us. The Duty Officer will ask for details of health, mobility and any other help required.

Our service is free, but we ask that clients make donations to cover our running costs and mileage claims by the volunteer drivers.

All drivers carry a small donation box in their cars and of course they collect you from your home, take you to your destination, wait, and bring you home again.

How we started

In 1988 Elmbridge Social Services invited Tony Harvey and Maureen Engelmann to discuss the setting up of a transport and general help group for residents of Walton and Hersham, similar to that recently started in Weybridge.

A steering committee was formed, and Tony Harvey chaired a meeting at Hersham Day Centre at which representatives from the local Rotary Club, the Round Table, local churches and members of the community were invited to offer support, both financially and as volunteers.

A helpline was set up, the scheme was advertised locally, and in October of that year Tony Harvey as the first Duty Officer and Chairman for Care in Walton and Hersham, took the first request from a member of the public.

We have been going strong ever since.
